Go-around and missed approach calls
What to say when you break off a landing — VFR go-around in the pattern and the IFR missed approach.
VFR go-around
If you abandon the landing, fly the airplane first, then tell the tower: "Cessna One Two Three Four Five, going around." Expect pattern instructions: "make left traffic, runway two seven" — read it back.
Non-towered
Announce on the CTAF so traffic on base/final knows: "Lincoln traffic, Cessna One Two Three Four Five, going around, runway one eight, Lincoln." Sidestep to the upwind side to keep departing traffic in sight.
IFR missed approach
Fly the published missed unless told otherwise, and report: "Cessna One Two Three Four Five, missed approach." ATC will issue a climb and heading or a hold — read back the altitude and the instruction.
Practice this with instant grading — free, no mic required.
